Hot Honey Pizza

I must say I’m fairly new to drizzling hot honey over pizza. I tried it a couple of months back at a food market and it changed my life. A Detroit-style pepperoni pizza with spicy honey drizzled over?! It was heaven at first bite.

How do you make hot honey?

You can really make hot honey any way you fancy. Many recipes use chilli flakes, others use fresh chilli and some use various different spicy sauces. I opt for chilli flakes to pack in most of the heat, combined with a dash of hot sauce to add a vinegary flavour too, which in turn cuts through the sweetness of the honey. For best results, I recommend combining the ingredients and gently warming them. This way the chilli flakes will be able to infuse the honey more efficiently, as opposed to just mixing everything together.

Garlic Flatbread Pizza

A shop-bought garlic flatbread makes the PERFECT base for a pizza and I have no shame in saying so. It’s clearly not authentic, but it is rather efficient.

What kind of flatbread should I use?

You’ll find them in most supermarkets in some form or variation. They’ll come in different shapes and thicknesses, but typically they average out to be the same size. For reference, I get mine from Sainsbury’s and they are 210g/7.4oz and 24x18cm/9×7″.

What toppings should I use?

I’d say pepperoni or something similar is essential, just to offer that salty/spicy contrast to the honey. I also like to add some olives and jalapeños for a pop of flavour and colour.

Baked Garlic Flatbread Pizza

One thing I like to do is to preheat the oven with the baking tray in it. When you add the pizzas to the hot tray it helps crisp up the base and keep them sturdy. Different-sized pizzas will take slightly different times to cook. It’ll likely be around 8-10 minutes though.

Garlic Flatbread Pizza FAQ

Can I use regular flatbreads?

Yep! If it’s because you can’t specifically find garlic flatbreads, you could just brush a little garlic butter over them. I also have a homemade flatbread recipe if you need it!

Can I use dough instead?

Yes – you can use store-bought dough or homemade. If it’s homemade you can use my easy homemade pizza recipe then just drizzle the hot honey over the top.

Can I use store-bought hot honey instead of homemade?

You sure can. Most supermarkets should sell it now.

Serving Flatbread Pizzas

The pizzas are done when they’re crisp and lightly charred around the outside and golden/bubbly on top. I typically let them rest for a minute or so before slicing, just to let them regain their structure.

When it comes to the hot honey you can really use as much or as little as you like! If you’re at all wary just start off with a small drizzle then add more if you want.

Equipment

  • Small Bowl (for hot honey)
  • Sharp Knife & Chopping Board
  • Large Baking Tray

Ingredients

  • 80g / 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1 tsp Hot Sauce (I like Frank’s or Cholula)
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli Flakes (can adjust to taste)
  • 2x Garlic Flatbreads (see notes)
  • 130g / 1/2 cup Pizza Sauce, or as needed (see notes)
  • 180g / 2 cups low-moisture Mozzarella, or as needed (see notes)
  • 12 slices Pepperoni, or as needed
  • sliced Black Olives & Fresh Jalapeños (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 220C/430F. Keep the oven tray in there so it gets nice and hot (this will help the base of the pizza to crisp up).
  • Combine the honey, hot sauce and chilli flakes in a bowl and warm in the microwave (10-20 seconds or so). Stir then leave to cool. You can also do this on the stove in a small pot (just bring to a simmer then remove and cool). You can easily adjust the heat with chilli flakes/hot sauce if desired.
  • Spread the pizzas with pizza sauce then top with mozzarella, pepperoni, jalapeños and olives (add a few pieces of mozzarella over the pepperoni to prevent it curling).
  • Take the hot tray out of the oven, place the pizzas on then bake them in the oven for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly charring around the edges and golden/bubbly on top.
  • Drizzle with your preferred amount of hot honey (store leftovers) then tuck in and enjoy!

Notes

a) Hot Honey – I like to heat the honey then let it cool as it helps the chilli flakes infuse the honey more efficiently/quickly. You can adjust this to your preferred spiciness if you like. Just add in a dash more chilli flakes after it has cooled, or if you want more spice with the extra tangy flavour, add in a dash more hot sauce. Alternatively you can also just buy hot honey from the supermarket!

b) Flatbreads – You’ll find them in most supermarkets, usually near the pizzas. They’ll come in all shapes and sizes, but for reference the flatbreads I typically use are 210g/7.4oz and 24x18cm/9×7″. Just use your best judgement to alter the quantities of toppings and time in the oven to suit whichever ones you get. In general, don’t swamp the flatbread with loads of toppings otherwise the base might struggle to keep its structure.

c) Pizza Sauce – You can of course use my Homemade Pizza Sauce! If you’re getting store-bought just try and get something nice and thick. If it’s looking a little watery consider simmering in a pot to thicken it up (the less excess moisture on top of the pizza the better). Again, don’t swamp the flatbread with sauce.

d) Mozzarella – I freshly grate a block but you can buy pre-grated. If you’re using mozzarella in a brine just make sure you thoroughly pat it dry to remove as much moisture as possible.

e) Oven – I like to get the baking tray nice and before adding the pizzas. This will help crisp up the bottom and keep it sturdy.

f) Calories – Per pizza assuming you use all the honey.
